MONROE — Brookville’s girls volleyball team captured the Division V, Southwest II district championship with a three set victory Saturday over Cincinnati Christian at Monroe High School.
It was the Lady Devils 19th consecutive victory.
The Lady Devils front line dominated the match with juniors Sidney Sprada scoring 22 kills and Logynn Barr 11 kills. Barr also had 13 digs and Sprada eight.
Brookville dominated the first set jumping out to a 20-8 lead before Cincinnati Christian started to battle back. The Lady Cougars closed to within eight points, 23-15 but the Lady Devils went on to secure a 25-16 first set win.
The scrappy Lady Cougars played a more determined second set and the Lady Devils seemed a little tentative as Cincinnati Christian built a four point lead, 12-8. Brookville began to battle back and Cincinnati Christian called a timeout clinging to a 13-12 advantage.
The match was tight after the timeout with Brookville taking a 14-13 lead before the Lady Cougars regained the upper hand to lead 21-19.
Brookville score five consecutive unanswered points to seize a 24-21 advantage but Cincinnati Christian refused to roll over and fought back to tie the set, 24-24. The Lady Devils closed the set with two kills to secure a 26-24 win.
The third set was almost a mirror image of the first, with Brookville taking a 20-9 lead on the way to a 25-15 set victory to secure the district crown.
“Cincinnati Christian came out and they gave their best effort every single point out there in the second set,” said Brookville coach Madeline Bazelak. “I told the girls that when you get to this point these teams are here for a reason. We are here for a reason, they are here for a reason, and you have to go out and play your best match.
“We talked all year about being consistent with our energy, consistent with our effort every single time we go out there to play,” Bazelak added. “We have a lot of strong pieces and when we get in system and we play together, that’s when we play our best volleyball.”
The Lady Devils advance to regional play to face Versailles, winners of the Division V, Southwest I district with a 28-26, 25-20, 30-32, 25-23 victory over Summit Country Day.
Brookville will face Versailles on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. in Kettering’s Trent Arena, 3301 Shroyer Rd. The winner of that match will advance to the regional final on Saturday at 2 p.m. to face the winner of the Southwest III, Central II regional semifinal match.
