Northmont tennis players advance to district tournament

Northmont senior Lily Braswell will face Ana Gotike of Mason in the first round of the district tournament Wednesday at Mason High School.

TROY — Northmont senior Lily Braswell defeated Tecumseh junior Sammy Russell 6-2, 6-0 in the finals of the Division I Southwest Sectional Saturday at Troy High School to advance to district.

After a first round bye Braswell, the No. 3 seed, opened with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Joni Martin of Sidney. She then defeated La’Issa Gakunzi of Stebbins 6-0, 6-0, and then scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maddie Lance of Greenville to face No. 4 seed Russell in the championship match.

Tyler Buxton also had a first round bye. She defeated Madelyn Shaw of Xenia 6-0, 6-0 and Mariah Thompson of Trotwood-Madison by the same score before losing to No. 2 seed Nina Short of Troy 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Braswell will face Ana Gotike of Mason in the first round of the district tournament Wednesday at Mason High School.

In doubles play Daisy Carpenter and Ashley Weiss also advanced to district. After a first round bye they defeated Lola Lomax and Alayna Lomax of Fairborn 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Carpenter and Weiss went on to defeat Rabiya Dauletaliy and Madie Mann of Stebbins 6-3, 6-0.

They then lost to Kailyn Payton and Morgan Britton of Butler 6-0, 6-2. Carpenter and Weiss ended up placing fourth after losing to the Troy doubles team of Maile Romberger and Izzy Lutz 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Carpenter and Weiss will open district play against Pratyusha Chaudhuri and Emma Wagner of Mason.
