Trail wins D-III sectional golf title

GREENVILLE — National Trail’s boys golf team is headed to the district tournament after claiming the Division III sectional title at Turtle Creek Golf Club in Greenville on Monday, Sept. 23.

The win comes on the heels of winning the Western Ohio Athletic Conference championship last week and is the Blazers fourth team title this season.

The Blazers battled rain through much of the day, but still managed to hang on to a 3-stroke win over Covington, firing a team total of 339.

Tri-County North finished 10th with a 401 and Twin Valley South was 13th with a 436.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team move on to the district tournament which will be held Monday, Sept. 30, at PipeStone Golf Club.

In addition to Trail advancing as team, North’s Brayden Bacher moves on as an individual. Bacher tied for 11th overall and was the fourth individual with an 86.

The Blazers were led by senior Nick Brubaker who shot 79 and finished 4th place on the day. Senior Justin Turner and freshman Josh Brubaker tied with 86, and Junior Kellen Laird followed with an 88 to round out the scoring. Senior Aidan Koehl carded a 95 for the non-scoring spot.

For North, Kole Shannon shot an 89, Ryan Shively shot 112, Jack Vanderschaaff shot a 114 and Jack Puchalski shot a 116.

For South, Aiden White led the way with a 101. Tyler Thuma shot 102, Trent Ray shot 116, Parker Howard shot 117 and Matthew Dehart shot 129.

The win advances the team to next week’s district tournament. The district tournament is a 12-team tournament with the top four finishers from the three sectionals.

According to Trail coach Ramon Rutan, this marks the fourth straight year the Blazers have qualified as a team, finishing 11th, 6th, and 5th in their previous attempts to advance.

The top two teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team from the district tournament advance to the state tournament.
