Safe room exhibit on display at Pork Festival

EATON — September is National Preparedness Month, and the Preble County Emergency Management Agency is bringing awareness to this campaign by displaying the Safe Room Exhibit at the Preble County Pork Festival.

The safe room exhibited was made locally in Middletown.

The exhibit will feature a room that can be installed in the ground near a home without a basement for a safe place to go. Those interested in the display can walk into the safe room to experience how it would feel if it were in your back yard. Safe rooms are the only way to mitigate the life safety threat posed by tornadoes, according to PC EMA Director Suzy Cottingim.

“If you’re visiting the Pork Festival, stop by to see the exhibit in the southeast quadrant of the Expo Building,” Cottingim said in a press release.

In a report the National Weather Service in Wilmington presented recently, this year Ohio has broken the record for the most confirmed tornadoes. The tallied number of tornadoes confirmed in Ohio in 2024 is 70, while the average in Ohio is 21.

“This has been a very active year in Ohio, and the year isn’t over. Ohio could see more severe weather in October and November. Preble County has been very lucky so far this year, but we have seen some severe weather, and residents need to have a plan to stay safe. The Preble County Emergency Management Agency frequently posts preparedness tips and information on our Facebook Page. Please follow the tips, like and share to help you and others be prepared,” Cottingim added.
