Forestry Workshop

BJ Price

The Year of Conservation at the Preble County Historical Society Farm continues! The Preble Soil and Water Conservation District invites you to a Forestry Workshop of historic proportions. Wagon rides will take participants over the creek and through the woods to explore the diverse woodlands, prairies, and historic features at the Historical Society Farm.

This event is free and open to everyone, whether you own or manage a woodlot or you just plain enjoy being outdoors with other like-minded persons. Several experts will be on hand to lead the workshop, and there will be plenty of time for questions from the participants.

Justin Law, our Service Forester covering Preble County, will guide attendees through what services the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) – Division of Forestry has to offer landowners. Mike Saylor from the ODNR – Division of Wildlife will speak on early successional wildlife habitat as participants tour bottom land that has transitioned from row crops to a young forest complete with Black walnut trees and some less desirable species. For the history enthusiasts out there, there will be a tour of the site of a former water-powered sawmill complete with the mill race that diverted water from Aukerman Creek to power the mill. There is something for everyone!

The Forestry Workshop will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Preble County Historical Society Farm, 7693 Swartsel Rd, Eaton. Watch for signs for parking. A free meal will be served to begin the workshop, followed by a wagon ride across Aukerman Creek to the presentations in the bottom field.

Even though this event is free, your reservation is required to ensure we have enough meals and wagon seating for everyone. Please RSVP by calling Preble SWCD at 937-456-5159 by Friday, Sept. 6. We hope to see you there!
