Second half struggles cost Arrows in 48-42 defeat

CAMDEN — First-year Preble Shawnee girls basketball coach Anitra Roell knows it will take some time for her team to find its groove.

Coming into the season the Arrows had little varsity experience on the roster returning.

During their first three games the Arrows have shown glimpses of ‘figuring’ it out.

That was the case on Tuesday (Dec. 5) when Shawnee hosted Carlisle.

The Arrows led 12-10 after the opening quarter and were up 30-23 at the break. But after halftime, Shawnee was outscored 25-12 and suffered a 48-42 setback to fall to 0-3 on the season.

“My girls came out in the first half and accomplished three out of the four goals I had set,” Roell said. “They played good team ball in the first half. After half time they just lost their momentum after Carlisle made a couple quick baskets.”

Addison Sergen-Eckert scored 10 of her 14 points in the first quarter to help Shawnee grab the early lead. She also had eight rebounds.

In the second quarter Caylee Hatmaker provided most of the offense, scoring 14 of her team-high 16 points. She grabbed seven rebounds.

Bella Agee led the team with 12 rebounds and six assists.

In the third, Carlisle used a 17-6 advantage to take the lead.

Autumn Smith tossed in eight points and had seven rebounds.

Aubrey Unger came off the bench to grab seven rebounds and had out four assists.

“My assistants and I told them when the season started it would take five or six games to get it figured out,” Roell said. “Someone has to step up and be my leader. I am confident that will happen soon. For now, we will keep at it and prepare for the next game.”

Shawnee was scheduled to host Dixie on Thursday, Dec. 7 and will host Brookville on Monday, Dec. 11.
