BROOKVILLE — Arlington and Parish cemeteries in Clay Township will once again be part of National Wreaths Across America Day slated for Saturday, Dec. 16.

Daniel Cooper Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, with the support of Brookville VFW Post 3288, AMVETS Post 1789 and the Brookville community, are coordinating the event.

Thanks to the generosity of the Brookville community, 845 veteran’s laid to rest at the two cemeteries will be honored.

A ceremony to honor the veterans will begin at noon at Arlington Cemetery. The ceremony will be held in the Clay Township meeting room at 8207 Arlington Road if there is inclement weather.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, volunteers are needed to help place wreaths on veterans’ graves.

Wreaths will be placed rain or shine. Hot chocolate will be provided by the VFW Auxiliary.

Veteran’s graves are identified by a bronze flag holder by the headstone or a bronze plaque on the headstone or at the foot of the headstone.

Families and volunteers of all ages are invited to attend and share in the patriotic experience.

Volunteers placing a wreath on a veteran’s grave will say the name of the veteran to ensure the legacy of duty, service, and sacrifice of each veteran is never forgotten.

Volunteers can play an important part in the mission to:

• remember the fallen

• honor those that serve and their families

• teach the next generation the value of freedom.

The following information is provided for volunteers regarding proper wreath placement:

• receive the wreath and approach the headstone

• extend the wreath outward, offering it to the veteran

• attach the wreath with a ziptie to the bronze flag holder with the bow at the top

• say the veteran’s name, thank him/her for his/her service

• please do not remove any items already placed at headstones, such as other wreaths, flowers, and other tokens left by family or friends

• military and cadets should render a slow salute or place a right hand over your heart

Volunteers may take a tag from the back of the wreath as a memento of your efforts.
