BROOKVILLE — The Brookville High School Class of 1963 will celebrate its 60th class reunion on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30, 2023.
They class will meet Friday evening at Studio One for a casual meal and on Saturday, Sept. 30 for breakfast at Rob’s Restaurant, followed by an afternoon walk of downtown Brookville and a tour of the Brookville Historical Society’s Museum, Exhibit Building and Depot and Saturday evening will meet at Brookhaven conference Center for a catered buffet dinner.
The 1963 senior class officers were Sally Price, president, Rob Bailey, vice president, John Plumer, treasurer and Phyllis Newsock as secretary.
Carl Hammond was the school superintendent and Don Couser was the high school principal. The class colors were blue and white, the class flower was the red rose and the class motto was “The future is a world limited by ourselves.”
In 1963, Singer’s Dairy Store advertised Kahn’s sliced bacon at 2 pounds for 89 cents. Boose Chevrolet was selling the Corvair Monza, Walt Disney’s Jules Verne’s Castaways in technicolor was playing at the James Theatre.
Lillian Wogoman was appointed head librarian at the Brookville Branch Library. Roy Somers celebrated his 50th year in the hardware business and U.A. ‘Judy’ Hay celebrated his 50th year in the furniture business.
The football homecoming king was Norm Loughman and the queen was Wendy Keller. In December at the Christmas dance, Rife Denlinger and Barbara Webster were crowned as king and queen.
At the Hoopsters Holiday, Sally Price was crowned as the queen and Lee Welsh was crowned as king. In May 1963, “Shangri-La was the theme for the prom. Bill Neiswonger and Carla Harrod were crowned as king and queen.
James Rhodes became Ohio’s 61st governor in January 1963. The road plan of Interstate 70 from Clayton to Preble County Line Road was announced in August 1963. Brookville 6th grade teacher, Miss Floris Cox retired in May. Betty Drexler was Brookville’s Welcome Wagon Hostess.
Auto Dealers in Brookville in 1963 were: Strausburg Motors who sold Dodge vehicles, Boose Chevrolet sold Chevrolets, Marshall Ford sold Fords, Thorpe Wysong Motors sold Chryslers, Valiants and Ramblers, Keener-Denlinger sold Oldsmobiles.
Reboulet’s offered Poll Parrot and Scamperoos children’s shoes for $2.99 pair. Minnich’s Sohio advertised Grip-Safe Atlas tires for $9.95 each. Towne Fashions ladies store was located at 211 Market Street.
Beechwood Homes was offering 3 bedroom, 1½ bath homes from $15,900 to $18,000 located off Arlington road, one block northeast of Mound Street. Homer L Ehler had a real estate office at 5 Market Street.
In 1963 the football coaches were Mr. Davis and Mr. Sanders. Mr. Denehy was in his first year as the basketball coach. High point man for the year was Bob Luman and Lee Welsh was rebound leader for the year. The baseball team had a seven win and two loss record in league play which assured the team second place in the Southwestern Buckeye League.
1963 was the 74th commencement at Brookville High School. Gerry Gruber, Tri-Hi-Y chaplain delivered the invocation and Rife Denlinger, Hi-Y chaplain delivered the benediction. The class Valedictorian was Emmy Witherell and Barbara Webster was the Salutatorian.
