ENGLEWOOD — Northmont School Board Vice President Jane Woodie recently announced the names of the three Northmont area Roll of Recognition recipients for this year.

The names of those selected for this year are Kevin Schweitzer, Kristi Leigh and Dr. Joseph Studebaker. All three are Northmont graduates.

Schweitzer is director of finance for the City of Clayton. Leigh is an on-air radio personality for I-Heart Media and Studebaker is a local eye doctor.

Nominees will have made a distinguished and significant contribution toward the beneficial growth and education of the students in this community. They will be Northmont graduates who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields.

In his board report, Superintendent Tony Thomas said that 26 teachers this year took the Resident Educator Summative Assessment, a rigorous, state-mandated assessment of all resident teachers.

Passage of this is required for a teacher to be eligible to apply for professional licensure.

“Good news! All 26 teachers passed,” Thomas said. “This speaks to the quality of our Resident Educator Program, the work of our facilitators Kristy Geiger and Jeff Spieles and the countless number of colleagues serving as mentors to our resident educators.”

Another item on Thomas’ report was that the Academic Challenge team traveled to two events during spring break.

“First, our team competed in New York City at the Hunter College High School Quiz Bowl competition,” he said.

Northmont posted a 7-3 record in that event, with both the varsity and JV teams against some of the top teams in the country.

At the end of spring break, three members of the team were invited to compete individually in Individual Player National Championship, which pitted 200 top players in the country against each other in a multi-round individual competition.

Northmont captain Ave Rieger finished 35th in the country and was the top player from Ohio.

Junior Adam Willams (52nd) and sophomore Ethan Kral (58th) also placed in the top 60.

Northmont was one of only two teams in the country to place three players in the top 60, Thomas reported.

He reminded parents that kindergarten registration is under way. Also, he said 10 DECA students qualified for international competition and will be heading to Orlando, Fla., for that event.

Student representative to the board, Worship Akpan, reported that state testing is beginning to take place in all the district schools.

Akpan also reported there will be a career and job recruitment fair on Friday, April 28 and 29. On April 29, there will be a helicopter, a fire truck and a mini-obstacle course in addition to dozens of career opportunities for children to explore.
