BROOKVILLE — City manager Sonja Keaton informed the park board the caretaker cabin in Golden Gate Park is getting a roof replacement.

“They’ve been experiencing some leaks in one of the corners,” Keaton said.

Keaton said an attempt to replace some of the worn-out shingles was made.

“We went up to change those shingles, but when we went to go lift the existing shingles up to slide the new shingle on, they were breaking up,” Keaton said.

Keaton indicated the shingles have been on the roof since 2005 when the cabin was built.

“They lasted 18 years, which is about the norm for shingled roofs,” Keaton said.

Keaton said she hopes to have the new shingles installed in May.

Keaton indicated the cost to remove the shingles currently on the roof and replace them with new shingles is around $8,500.

Keaton said she hopes the cost will also allow for a new roof on the park’s storage shed located behind the cabin.

Keaton said she researched replacing the current roof with a metal roof,

“The metal roof was more than $14,000,” Keaton said.

“The shingles have a 50-year warranty and the labor on both, the metal and the shingle roof for 10 years, were equal,” Keaton continued.

“I couldn’t see the justification of going to a metal roof,” Keaton said.

In other matters, Keaton said the city service department removed six dead trees from Golden Gate Park.

“We finally had a chance to get in there and get some of those dead trees out,” Keaton said.

“Unfortunately, they seem to be grouped from about the drive of shelter 4 and the Castle Playground toward the exit to give you an idea where the trees were located,” Keaton continued.

Keaton said now that the trees are gone, the plan is to remove the tree stumps before this year’s community picnic, which is scheduled July 27-29 in Golden Gate Park.
