OEMA pays for tree debris removal

BROOKVILLE – City manager Sonja Keaton informed council the city received funds from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency that will be used to pay the city’s portion of last year’s tree debris removal project behind the city’s wastewater treatment plant located on South Wolf Creek St.

Keaton said last year at this time the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Natural Resources Conservation Service office awarded a contract to clean up the fallen trees behind the wastewater treatment plant as a result of the 2019 Memorial Day tornado.

The cleanup, Keaton said, was completed last April.

“The city’s 25 percent share of that project totaled $20,344 and to date the city has not been invoiced for that project,” Keaton said.

Keaton said much to her surprise, the city on March 2 received a check for that same amount from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.

“After several phone calls, I found out the state was actually paying 100 percent of the local share of that project,” Keaton said.

“They were tying it back to the May 27, 2019 tornado,” Keaton explained.

“In the meantime, we are waiting on receiving our invoice for that project, so that will cancel that out and there will be no city funds for that project,” Keaton said.

In other matters, Keaton told council the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission board approved the Surface Transportation Program projects for the two West Westbrook Road resurfacing projects.

The projects are:

Phase 1: West Westbrook Road from Arlington Road to June Place. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
