Wildcats crush T’bolts in final regular season game

CLAYTON — Springfield jumped out to a 21-0 lead Thursday as the Wildcats slashed their way to a lopsided 48-7 victory over Northmont during a ‘Thursday Night Lights’ game broadcast by myTV Dayton.

The Wildcats amassed 370 total yards; 237 rushing and 133 passing while limiting Northmont to 172 total yards, 115 of which were rushing. Quinten Churchman, a junior, led the Thunderbolts with 91 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Christopher Summers Jr. led the Wildcats with 114 yards rushing on eight carries averaging 14.3 yards per carry with one TD. Quarterback Brent Upshaw completed seven of 12 pass attempts for 122 yards and one TD. Wide receiver Sherrod Lay Jr. also tossed an 11 yard touchdown pass to Amileo Novell late in the fourth quarter.

Northmont’s passing attack was anemic. Brady Lupton completed five of 13 pass attempts for 40 yards with one interception. Bryce Staggs completed one of six attempts for 17 yards.

Aidan Pendleton led the Northmont defense with 12 tackles, five solo with one tackle for a loss. Dominic Alexander had six tackles, three solo with one for a loss. Jonas Ayler had six tackles, two solo with one for a loss.

With the victory Springfield concluded regular season play with a 5-2 record in the Greater Western Ohio Conference for third place and a 6-4 overall record.

Northmont closed regular season play dead last in the GWOC with a 1-6 conference record and 2-8 overall.

Northmont, the No. 11 seed, will face No. 6 seed Lebanon at Lebanon in the opening round of the Division 1, Region 2 playoffs on Friday, Nov. 1.

Springfield, the No. 4 seed, will host No. 13 seed Hilliard Bradley on Friday.
