Northmont’s new office/preschool construction on schedule

ENGLEWOOD — The Northmont City Schools Board of Education gathered at Northmoor Elementary for its October 14 meeting, with updates on student achievements, ongoing projects, and recent successes.

Preschool and central office construction update: Construction of the district’s new preschool and central office at 1150 W. National Rd., continues on schedule and under budget. Phase I of the project is nearing completion, with drywall, pipe insulation, and HVAC work already finished.

The ceiling grid, electric grid, fiber connection to the Kleptz Early Learning Center (KELC), and cabinetry are expected to be completed by October 23. Flooring installation is set to begin soon, after which the area will be closed off to avoid damage. The hope is that Phase I will be complete by November 3, with furniture and technology being moved in the following week.

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Ann Ferraro reported that she and Business Manager Brandon Knecht are in the process of preparing the district’s five-year financial forecast, which will be presented and is expected to be approved at the November board meeting.

MVCTC Update

Dr. Espeleta, representing the Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC), proudly shared that the MVCTC received five stars on its recent state report card. He also extended an invitation to everyone for the center’s Veterans Day celebration on November 11.

Board President Shout-Out

Board President Linda Blum commended the Food Service team for their efficiency in organizing this year’s Fall BBQs, which were well-received across the district.

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent Tony Thomas shared various updates, including:

● Rotary Auction Tickets: Available now for purchase.

● Montgomery County Video: The superintendent showcased a video highlighting the strengths and achievements of the Northmont community, produced by Montgomery County. The video will be released soon and available for everyone to view.

● Athletics Updates: Northmont hosted the GWOC cross-country meet last weekend. Additionally, several girls’ tennis and boys’ golf athletes advanced to district competitions. The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) tournaments for volleyball and soccer begin next week. The volleyball team is seeded No. 1, as is the girls’ soccer team, with the boys’ soccer team seeded third.

● Northwood PTO Read-a-Thon: The PTO raised $10,000 during last year’s read-a-thon and is aiming for $12,000 this year. A tremendous effort from the Northwood community!

● Marching Band Performance: The Northmont Marching Band is set to perform at Lucas Oil Stadium this Friday at 10:30 a.m.

● Apple Crunch Event: The farm-to-table initiative, The Great Apple Crunch, was a success, with over 2,500 apples distributed in the elementary schools, highlighting the district’s commitment to healthy eating and local produce.

● Parent-Teacher Conferences: Attendance at the recent parent-teacher conferences was reported as strong across the district, reflecting ongoing engagement between families and educators.

Homecoming Week

Homecoming week was successful, with the Powder Puff game, parade, homecoming football game, and dance all running smoothly. The dance saw 970 students in attendance, celebrating a memorable evening. Superintendent Thomas thanked all the staff who contributed to making the week special for the students.

Cyber Security System Renewal

Amy Mangen presented a memo to the board recommending the district renew its cyber security services with Forward Edge for a three-year term. Mangen noted the district’s satisfaction with Forward Edge’s timely responses and state-of-the-art security system. By committing to a three-year agreement, the district expects to save approximately $4,000 per year.
