CLAYTON — Wayne is a different football team with Tyrell Lewis at quarterback. Lewis missed four games due to injury and the Warriors lost all four.

Lewis tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Jamier Averette-Brown, one for 50 yards in the third quarter and the other a 47 yarder in the fourth quarter, to help lead Wayne to a 30-14 victory during a monsoon rain Friday night at Northmont.

With the win Wayne improved to 1-2 in conference play and 2-4 overall. Northmont shares an identical record.

The Thunderbolts took an early 7-0 lead on a 19 yard TD run by Chris Pryor followed by a Colby Barr kick at 7:14 in the first quarter.

Wayne failed to move the ball on its first possession. Brady Lupton returned a short punt to the Warriors’ 39. Northmont drove the ball deep into Wayne territory but couldn’t crack the end zone. Wayne took over on downs at its 16.

After that, the Warriors scored four touchdowns to take a lopsided 30-7 lead with 10:27 left in the fourth quarter.

On their first scoring drive Wayne running back Isaiah Thompson (23 carries, 137 yards, one TD) chewed up chunks of yardage as the Warriors drove to the Northmont 19. Lewis hit Ka’maurri Smith for a first and goal at the seven.

A few plays later Thompson scored on a seven yard run and Carson Limberg’s kick tied the game 7-7 with 9:27 left in the first half.

Wayne’s second touchdown came when the Warriors blocked a Northmont punt. Aden Vaughn pounced on the ball and raced 20 yards for a touchdown with 1:05 left in the half. On a botched snap on the extra-point, holder Averette-Brown ran the ball in for a two-point conversion to give Wayne a 15-7 halftime lead.

Lewis tossed a 50 yard TD pass to Averette-Brown with 2:10 left in the third quarter and a two-point conversion toss to Limberg gave the Warriors a 23-7 lead.

Lewis connected with Averette-Brown for a 47 yard TD pass with 10:27 left in the game and Limberg’s kick put the Warriors up 30-7. Lewis finished with nine completions on 18 pass attempts for 163 yards and two TDs.

Pryor scored for Northmont on a three yard run with 7:43 remaining and Barr’s kick made the final tally, 30-14. Pryor had nine carries for 35 yards and two TDs. Calilien Grant led Northmont with 81 yards on 23 carries. Brady Lupton had seven carries for 70 yards.

Northmont’s Homecoming game is this Friday night against Fairmont. The Homecoming Parade is Thursday at 6 p.m. on Union Boulevard with the parade starting just south of the Wenger Road intersection and terminating in Centennial Park with a bonfire and pep rally.
