Northmont Board reviews state report card score

CLAYTON — The Northmont City Schools Board of Education convened at Northmont Middle School on September 23, to discuss a range of important topics, from student and staff achievements to ongoing projects that are shaping the district’s future.

Curriculum Technology and Instruction Update – The district received 4 (out of 5) stars on the State Report Card that was released last week. Early Literacy earned 3 stars, while Achievement, Progress, and Gap Closing received 4 stars with 5 stars for Graduation Rate.

Community Engagement and Student Involvement – The board highlighted the success of the BBQs hosted by Northmoor and Northwood with Englewood Hills and Union upcoming, noting the invaluable support of staff, parents, and the high school students who volunteered to help at the Kleptz Early Learning Center. These annual events continue to foster community spirit and provide meaningful engagement for students across the district.

Upcoming High School Top Ensembles Concert – A special shout out was given to the high school instrumental music instructors, whose efforts have enabled the High School Top Ensembles to be concert-ready so early in the school year.

Preschool and Central Office Renovation Update – The board received an update on the ongoing renovation project at the new preschool and central office, which will be located in the same building as the Kleptz YMCA at 1200 W. National Rd. Construction continues to progress with drywall nearly complete in the Phase I areas.

Favorable quotes were received for change orders that include adding electrical outlets, relocating fire extinguishers, and installing energy-efficient flat panel LED lighting. These changes, which are covered by ESSER funds, will enhance the building’s efficiency while keeping costs within budget. The NJROTC students will assist with the Central Office move in November, and with the preschool move during summer 2025.

Treasurer’s Financial Report – Treasurer Ann Ferraro presented the financial report for August, noting a challenge posed by the recent increase in property taxes.

“Since property taxes went up, the state sees us as ‘richer,’ so they’ve cut our funds in other places,” Ferraro explained.

While the increase in local revenue is beneficial, the state’s recalculation of funding creates some financial shifts that will need to be managed carefully. Ferraro emphasized that the district will continue to be strategic in its budgeting to ensure resources are used efficiently.

Student Representative Roundtable – Board President Linda Blum brought up old business regarding the Student Representative Roundtable. Mrs. Blum announced that she will be partnering to help run the meetings, which will begin on October 26 at West Carrollton High School. This roundtable will provide a platform for student representatives to engage directly with legislators on key issues, including school funding, vouchers, and religious instruction during the school day. The board is excited about this initiative, as it empowers students to have their voices heard in discussions that impact their education.

National Merit Semi-Finalists Recognized – The Board proudly recognized three National Merit Semifinalists from Northmont High School. These students’ academic achievements represent the high standards upheld across the district and continue Northmont’s tradition of scholastic excellence. The students are Russell Dillak, Nathan Haley, and Kevin Liu.

Technology and Chromebook Pilot Program – A new Chromebook pilot program is underway to enhance the district’s technology offerings. This is part of Northmont’s ongoing effort to integrate innovative tools into classrooms. A Family Listening Session focused on technology will be held this week, providing parents with an opportunity to share their thoughts and feedback on this important initiative.
