Waynesville big plays too much for Brookville

WAYNESVILLE — Things were going just the way Brookville had hoped as the Blue Devils were leading Waynesville 21-7 in the second quarter and driving once again.

However, a lost fumble completely turned the game around and Waynesville exploited a young and inexperienced Brookville secondary with long passes and rolled to a 56-29 victory.

The loss drops Brookville’s to an even two wins and two losses. Brookville is 0-1 in the SWBL Buckeye Division with Homecoming occurring this week in Brookville.

Alex Amburgy threw five touchdown passes for Waynesville during the game, completing nine passes for 324 yards. Four of those were long bombs covering 44, 53, 45, and 63 yards respectively.

Garrett Lundy caught two of the long tosses and Trent Davis also grabbed a pair. Davis also grabbed a 17-yard TD pass in the first quarter and Lundy had three longs runs for touchdowns covering 31, 31, and 73 yards.

The Spartans scored 35 points in just under 13 minutes of play to seize control and determine the outcome of the game.

Waynesville ran for 243 yards during the game also as Lundy garnered 176 in 15 totes.

Brookville had 391 total yards getting 248 rushing and 143 passing.

The Blue Devils scored on their opening possession as on the second play from scrimmage D.J. Moore broke off a 54-yard scamper for a touchdown and Brookville led 7-0. The Spartans answered with a long drive with Trent Davis snagging a 17-yard pass on a deep cross in the corner of the end zone to tie the game at seven.

Other Brookville scores came on a 10 yard run by Moore, and a three yard run by Jake Lenser to put the Devils up 21-7.

Waynesville countered with six unanswered TDs; a 44 yard pass by Amburgy to Lundy, a 53 yard pass by Amburgy to Trenton Davis, a 45 yard Amburgy pass to Davis, a 31 yard run by Lundy, a 63 yard Amburgy pass to Lundy and 31 yard run by Lundy to give the Spartans a 49-21 advantage.

Lenser scored on a seven yard pass from Boston and Moore scored a two-point conversion on a pass from Boston to make it 49-29.

Waynesville scored the final points on a 73 yard by Lundy to make the final tally 56-29.

Stats show Boston threw for 80 yards and Resor 63. Willoughby grabbed two balls for 52 yards and D.J. Moore three for 30 yards. Adams had one catch for 33 yards. Defensively D.J. Moore and Jake Lenser each had six tackles. Waynesville turned two Brookville turnovers into 14 points.

Game Notes show the last time an opponent score over fifty points against Brookville was Bellbrook in 2019. It is the first time that Brookville has been in a game that ended 56-29. The total of 85 points is the fifth highest scoring game in Brookville Football history.

Brookville will host Madison Friday night for Homecoming. Brookvillesports.com, a free internet radio website, will broadcast the game beginning at 6:30 p.m.
