PREBLE COUNTY — On Friday, Aug. 30, responsible student drivers were awarded with free McDonald’s meals during seat belt checks conducted at Preble Shawnee High School, National Trail High School and Twin Valley South High School.

Each person caught wearing their seat belt received the “You’ve Been Caught Doing Good” coupon from McDonald’s.

Preble County Sheriff’s Deputy Monebrake and the Preble Shawnee Hope Squad led the charge in spreading awareness about the importance of wearing seat belts at Shawnee. According to the check at Shawnee, 111 student drivers were wearing their seat belts, six students were not, and 100 percent of school staff were belted up.

Deputy Aaron Melling, Principal Mike Eyler, and National Trail’s HOPE Squad members also conducted seat belt checks early Friday morning, Aug. 30. They stopped 108 cars, and reported 98 drivers were buckled up, giving the school a 90.74 percent compliance.

Deputy Greg McWhinney organized the seat belt check at Twin Valley South. It was completed as part of the competitive contest between National Trail Schools and Preble Shawnee Junior/ Senior High to promote the use of seat belts by rewarding students and staff for wearing them. Members of the TVS SADD organization led by Dianna Beneke helped in the South seat belt check. They observed 132 incoming vehicles between the hours of 6:50 a.m. and 7:25 a.m. at the first stop sign on Education Drive at Twin Valley South. During the seat belt check, there were six drivers found not wearing seat belts.

“This group of students from TVS SADD organization had great energy and represented their school to the highest level,” a TVS post on Facebook noted. “The seat belt numbers were improved from last year’s stats. Last year we counted 16 people not wearing seat belts.”

All three districts shared special thanks to Hamilton Family McDonald’s and the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.
