La Salle running game overwhelms Northmont

CINCINNATI — La Salle’s running game Friday overpowered Northmont as the Lancers racked up 314 rushing yards and 422 yards overall to post a 27-6 victory over the Thunderbolts. Northmont had 192 total yards, 96 both rushing and passing.

Lancers’ running backs Isaac Goldschmidt had 138 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns while Ty Brown amassed 121 yards on eight runs and also scored two TDs. Quarterback Patrick McLaughlin gained 43 yards on 12 carries including a 30 yard scamper and also completed 10 of 16 pass attempts for 108 yards with one interception.

La Salle controlled time of possession holding the ball for 25:46 compared to 15:11 for Northmont.

The start of the game was delayed by storms that knocked the power out at La Salle’s stadium. Brown scored on a 27 yard run with six minutes left in the first quarter to make it 6-0.

Goldschmidt scored early in the second quarter on a two yard run. Jack Schroer’s kick made it 13-0. Goldschmidt scored again on the first play of the fourth quarter on a one yard run. Schroer’s kick gave the Lancer’s a 20-0 advantage.

The Thunderbolts lone touchdown came on a 28 yard pass by Brady Lupton to Akim Shabazz with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter.

Brown capped the scoring with a 37 yard run midway through the fourth quarter. Schroer added the point after to give La Salle a 27-6 win.

Lupton led the team in rushing yards with 45 on nine carries. Chris Pryor had 29 yards on five carries and Calilien Grant had 22 on 11 carries.

Shabazz led the Thunderbolts with two pass receptions for 66 yards. Braylen Russell had one reception for 38 yards.

On defense Santana Keys had one interception for 40 yards and led the team with seven tackles, six solo. Braylen Russell also had six solo tackles.

With the victory the Lancers improved to 2-0 overall while the Thunderbolts dropped to 0-2.

Northmont hosts Cincinnati Withrow (0-2) this Friday at 7 p.m.
