CLAYTON — The Northmont Board of Education held its regular meeting at Northwood Elementary on Monday, August 26, addressing various items on the consent agenda and hearing updates from the superintendent.

Consent Agenda

Several donations were made in memory of graduate and Englewood Councilwoman Adrienne Draper, who recently passed away unexpectedly, to benefit Northmont DECA, reflecting the community’s ongoing support for the program.

Additionally, the board approved Becker Construction, Inc. as the contractor for the renovation project at the YMCA leased space that the board will relocate it offices. The project will be funded through ESSER funds, the Preschool Fund, and Permanent Improvement funds. The Board also voted to change the OSBA Alternate Delegate from Nick Orrill to Dr. Karl Espeleta.

Superintendent’s Report

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has requested Northmont to host state semifinal games for volleyball, bringing significant recognition to the district. The finals are scheduled to be held at Wright State.

YMCA Renovation Approval

The superintendent reported on the competitive bidding process for the YMCA renovation project. The chosen contractor submitted a bid that came in under the proposed budget, marking a successful step forward in this important project.

First-Day Enrollment Count

Enrollment figures were discussed, noting a slight decrease of 15 students compared to the previous year. However, there was notable growth at the Kleptz Early Learning Center and Northwood Elementary, with 28 and 32 additional students, respectively. The district also saw an influx of 18 sophomores participating in a new CTC program. The superintendent emphasized that while there is still a trend of higher enrollment in upper grades, the numbers are beginning to level off. A more detailed count is expected in October.

Youth-Led Prevention Award

Northmont High School Student Assistance Counselor Amanda Schroeder, received recognition as the Youth-Led Prevention Advisor of the Year. Schroeder, who leads the school’s Hope Squad, has made significant contributions to supporting student mental health and wellness.

Football Game Update

The recent football game drew a full crowd, particularly in the student cheering section. Superintendent Tony Thomas stated that the students in this section were doing a great job showing school spirit and encouraging their team. However, the board discussed the need for adjustments to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment.

Going forward, changes will be made regarding student entry and seating. Only students with a valid Northmont student ticket will be allowed in the student section, and students from other schools will not be permitted to sit in this area.

Information will be shared with students and families soon to clarify the expectations of behavior at Northmont sporting events. Board President Linda Blum emphasized the importance of enforcing these rules to maintain a positive atmosphere at future games.

The next Northmont Board of Education meeting will continue to address key issues as the district progresses through the school year. The meeting will take place on Monday, September 9, at Northmont Middle School.
