Dominic Lopez took 1st place at the Northmont Cross Country Invitational with a time of 16:31.2.
CLAYTON — Sophomore Dominic Lopez took 1st place Saturday at the Northmont Cross Country Invitational with a time of 16:31.2 to help the Thunderbolts earn a fourth place finish in a field of 10 scoring teams.
“Throughout the last two weeks we had worked out multiple times on the second mile, and I told Dom that he needed to make a move during that mile,” said Northmont coach Joe Barnes. “That is exactly what he did, coming down the hill by the tennis courts he made a strong move and never lost the lead from that point on.
“Winning any high school meet is a great accomplishment, but to do it as a sophomore is even better,” Barnes added. “Dom has high goals this year and his work ethic will get him to those goals. It’s going to be a fun season watching him grow and succeed.”
Everett Muhlenkamp of Tippecanoe placed 2nd in 16:41.2.
Other Northmont runners included Owen Bush placing 7th (17:14.7). Grant Mergler 11th (17:34.9). Nick Diller 45th (19:21.9). Adam Wallace 46th (19:24.5). Matthew Helmick 52nd (19:35.4). Alex Moore 82nd (20:58.7). Chase Bishop 83rd (20:59.0). Noah Comer 99th (21:35.4). Henry Colley-Lambright 125th (23:09.2). Jacob Goble 136th (24:32.1). Cade Matthews 148th (25:30.6). Owen Sanders 163rd (32:19.3).
The Lady Bolts were led by Jazlen Simpson who placed 7th in 20:37.5 and Makenna Long in 8th in 20:38.9 to help Northmont place 3rd overall out of eight scoring teams.
Lancaster runners took the top five fastest times led by Marisa Heil in 1st at 19:02.6 as the Gales won the girls race in dominant fashion.
