DAYTON — Much like his Division III counterpart Griffin Roell of Twin Valley South who ran a personal best time Friday in the 800 meter run state final but didn’t finish in the top eight, Northmont senior Daron Porter ran a strong race Saturday in the Division I state final of the 800.

Porter crossed the finish line in 12th place in 1:55.04, just six tenths of a second off his personal best time of 1:54.44 that he clocked at the district meet, which set a new school record in the 800.

“Within six tenths of a second. That is pretty consistent,” said Northmont distance coach jack Lintz.

That shows how tough the competition is at the state meet.

Porter gave it his best shot and was happy to have the opportunity to compete in the state final.

“It was just a tough race,” Porter said. “I was pretty happy with my time. It was a dream come true to make it to state. I was just glad that I got to run here with all those guys. It was amazing.”

Calvin Kilgallon of Lebanon took first place in 1:51.23. Hugh Jacobsmeyer of Olentangy was second in 1:52.39. Preston Rieger of New Philadelphia was third at 1:52.57. Domonic Jackson of St. Xavier was fourth at 1:53.11. Owen Towler of Gahanna Lincoln placed fifth at 1:53.16, Jayden Williams of Oregon Clay took sixth in 1:53.44. Sam Hopp of Twinsburg placed seventh in 1:53.47. Brock Farris of Boardman took eighth in 1:53.88.
