BROOKVILLE — May is National Bike Month and the Brookville Police Department wants to celebrate bike safety by hosting a National Bike to the Library Day, Bike Helmet Giveaway and Pizza Party on Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brookville Branch Library, 120 Blue Pride Drive in Brookville.

Officer Forest Wilson will pass out free bike helmets for all members of the family, while supplies last. There will be a story time at 11 a.m. with the police and possibly other first responders. Opportunities to talk with police officers and a pizza party will follow the story time and helmet giveaway. The pizza party is courtesy of the Brookville Police Department and the helmets are provided by Dayton Children’s Hospital.

When asked why they wanted to have the program at the library, Brookville P. D. Chief of Police Douglas Jerome replied, “We try to participate in mutual community outreach programs with our library whenever possible. They are a positive asset and community partner to the City of Brookville Police Department.”

Officer Wilson, Brookville P. D.’s Crime Prevention Officer, stresses the importance of biking safely: “Our department is very concerned about safety. Bicycle helmets save lives.”

“I hope the attendees will always place safety first. An average of 800 bicyclists die every year due to crashes. Following the rules of the road and wearing a DOT approved helmet reduces injuries and saves lives,” he continued.
