Trail boys, Eaton’s Kleinberg advance to districts

GREENVILLE, DAYTON & VERSAILLES — The National Trail boys golf team advanced through a tough sectional field in the Division III sectional at Turtle Creek golf course last week to advance to the district tournament.

The team finished second, where the top four teams advanced to the district tournament.

According to Blazer coach Ramon Rutan, his team also broke the school record for most wins in a season by finishing 11-1 during the tournament. The previous record was held by the 2002 team that won 80 times.

This tournament puts the 2023 team to 85 wins with at least one more tournament to play.

The Blazers were led by sophomore Kellen Laird, who finished 4th overall with a 77. Junior Justin Turner finished 9th overall after firing an 85. Junior Nick Brubaker finished in 10th overall with an 86, and senior Fletcher Davies ended up in 14th place with an 88.

That gave the team a 336 total which ended up eight strokes behind Newton and 12 ahead of Covington.

Junior Aidan Koehl finished with a 102 as the fifth score.

The Blazers were scheduled to compete in the district tournament on Monday, Oct. 2 at Heatherwoode Golf Club.

The top two teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the state tournament.

Twin Valley South finished 12th with a 454. Seth Vorhis led the way with a 107. Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers were Aidan White (121), Parker Howard (115), Trenton Ray (115), and Wesley Hager (117).

Tri-County North finished 13th with 479. The team was led by Jack Vanderschaff with a 105. Brayden Bacher finished with 113, Zane Owens had a 126, Blake Stump a 138 and Ryan Shively a 135.

In Division II, at Pipestone, Brookville finished 10th with a 384, Preble Shawnee was 11th with a 400 and Eaton was 12th with a 409.

For Brookville, Landon Trent had a 91, Drew Holt shot a 95, Jackson Kleismit a 96, Isaiah Hoff had a 102 and Troy Peak ended with a 107.

For Preble Shawnee, Levi Agee had an 89. Jaydin Fields finished with a 96, Carson Hollon a 105 and Landon Tubbs and Wyatt Duckworth each had a 110.

For Eaton, Gabe McCarty and Anthoney Watson each shot a 95. They were followed by Andrew Webb (103), Derek McCoy-Dudas (116) and AJ Beeghly (118).

On the girls’ side, Eaton’s Karley Kleinberg finished eighth overall with a 93 and claimed the third individual qualifying spot in the Division II sectional at Stillwater Valley Golf Course last week.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced. Rounding out the lineup for Eaton, which finished eighth as a team with a score of 446, were Alanna Smith (101), Sophie Kochensparger (107) and Jozee McCloud (143).

Kleinberg is scheduled to play on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Heatherwoode.
