MIDDLETOWN — Kory Davis rushed for four touchdowns and a career high 216 yards as Brookville held off and upset the state’s ninth ranked team Friday, the Madison Mohawks 42-21. The win moved Brookville to 4-1 on the season while Madison dropped to 4-1.

It was a game that saw Brookville dominate and control through almost three quarters as they built up a stunning 28-0 lead over the resurgent Mohawks. In the final explosive and crazy final 12 minutes Madison scored off a long drive, then returned a fumble for a touchdown to cut into the lead.

Following a TD by Brookville, Madison scored on a long pass and then recovered an onside kick and appeared to be ready to pull off an incredible comeback. However, an interception by Brookville defensive back Seth Hoover set up the final score of the game before Keegan Mehr iced the game by making a diving interception in the final minutes of play.

The game started as Brookville forced a fumble and Keegan Mehr fell on the loose ball at the Madison 47. Brookville turned the miscue into seven points as they embarked on a clock eating drive of 11 plays that took 6:18. Jake Lenser went up the middle and scored a six yard touchdown to cap the drive. Aden Lamb booted the PAT and Brookville led 7-0 with 4:50 remaining in the first period.

Madison responded with a long 15-play drive that went into the 2nd period of play. The Mohawks got to the one on third down, but a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 11. A pass was broken up by Jake Lenser and Madison lined up for a field goal attempt, which sailed just wide right.

The Blue Devils moved 80 yards in just seven plays to score the second touchdown of the game. The driver featured a 35 yard run by Mehr to the Mohawks’ three. Mehr scored on a quarterback sneak and the PAT by Lamb clanked off the right upright but managed to fall past the crossbar and Brookville led 14-0 with 6:34 left in the first half.

The teams exchanged fumbles but the half ended with Brookville leading 14-0.

Brookville got the ball to start the second half and promptly drove 67 yards in 11 plays taking 6:55 off the clock to take a three-touchdown lead. Davis scored on a 22 yard run but after losing place kicker Lamb to an injury, the Devils went for two and Lenser scooted untouched to put Brookville up 22-0 with 5:05 left in the third period.

Madison was forced to punt when Jordan Meyers dropped a Madison runner for a loss on third down. Then disaster struck for Madison as a bad snap sailed over the punter’s head and Brookville would set up shop at the Mohawk 17. Three plays later the Blue Devils scored as Kory Davis pranced in from nine yards out with 1:39 left in the third frame. A two point conversion failed but Brookville seemed in total control leading 28-0.

The Mohawks were ranked 9th in the state for a reason and they would prove it by starting a furious comeback. Early in the final stanza Madison capped off a seven play 61-yard drive with a touchdown. The big play was a 30 yard jaunt by Matt Wheeler that moved the ball to the Brookville one. Two plays later Kaleb Miller dove in for a touchdown. The kick hit the crossbar and Brookville led 28-6 with 10:47 on the clock.

Jayden Resor fell on an onside kick for the Devils at the Brookville 40. Two penalties moved the ball back and on 3rd and 18 at the 32 Brookville fumbled and Kaden Sarbough picked up the ball at the 26 and bolted down the sideline for a defensive touchdown. Kaleb Miller ran in the PAT and it was now 28-14 with 9:13 on the clock.

Madison kicked it deep, and Brookville returned the ball to the 27. The Devils scored in four plays. Kory Davis had a huge 48-yard run and then capped off the drive on a 13-yard bolt for a touchdown. The two point attempt failed and it was 34-14.

The explosion of points in the final frame continued as Madison scored in three plays after the Brookville kickoff. On a 3rd down Jordan Perry got behind the Brookville defense, gathered in a pass from Quarterback Cy Thompson and 52 yards later it was a touchdown. Alden Graham booted the PAT and it was 34-21 Brookville with 5:54 on the clock.

Madison recovered an onside kick and had the ball in Brookville territory. A first down a pass was deflected and intercepted by Seth Hoover who returned the ball to the Brookville 45.

Three plays later Brookville iced the game as Lenser bolted 24 yards up the gut. Davis then gained three before he broke off a 28 yard run featuring a number of broken tackles, a spin and short sprint that resulted in a touchdown with 3:02 left in the game. Lenser scored the PAT and Brookville led 42-21.

On Madison’s first play after the kickoff Keegan Mehr made a diving interception at the Brookville 46 and Brookville had chalked up a victory.

Jake Lenser had 96 yards rushing on 15 lugs, a touchdown, and a pair of two-point conversions. Keegan Mehr had 52 yards rushing on 10 attempts and touchdown.
