EATON — After a few halftime adjustments, along with another solid defensive effort, Eaton broke open a close game with visiting Talawanda to get its third straight win to begin the season, taking down the Brave, 28-7, on Friday, Sept. 1.

“They (Talawanda) came out, played hard (and) threw a couple of wrinkles (at us). We had to adjust to it. We didn’t adjust quite as quickly as we would have liked,” Eaton coach Brad Davis said. “(We) challenged them at halftime. The first half wasn’t our standard. We responded for the most part in the second half.”

Eaton got on the board first on 7-yard touchdown run by sophomore Brycen Simpson with 3:12 left in the first quarter. Jon Hewitt’s point after gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Eaton also missed two long field goal attempts and turned the ball over on its other three possessions of the first half. The field goal attempts were from 57- and 49 yards and both just missed.

In the second half, senior quarterback Chris Atkins had a hand in all three Eaton scores.

He scrambled 29 yards for a touchdown with 7:17 left in the third quarter for a 14-0 lead.

On the Eagles next drive, he connected with Leslie Orr for a 39-yard touchdown pass for a 21-0 lead with 4:07 left in the third.

After the Eagles blocked a Talawanda punt, Atkins hooked up with Brayden Deem for a 7-yard TD pass with :52 left in the third to make it a 28-0 game.

Atkins completed 7-of-10 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 42 yards and another score.

Orr caught five passes for 94 yards.

Simpson had 15 carries for 71 yards, while Cordis Berard led the ground attack with 90 yards on 13 attempts.

Despite the win Davis said his team has plenty to work on, including committing less penalties.

“Some sloppiness still, way too many penalties,” Davis said. “We didn’t keep our composure. We didn’t play with class and poise. Those are some things that will be addressed tomorrow (Saturday). Happy with the win. Through all of that we’re still 1-0 (this week). We accomplish that goal, just needed to do it a little better.”

Eaton (3-0) hits the road this week to begin Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division play at Oakwood. The Lumberjacks are 2-1 on the season with back-to-back wins over Northridge and Milton-Union.
