BROOKVILLE — In February 1970, Mr. Russell Rhoades owner of Rhoades Super Valu Market, announced the sale of his store to Mr. Howard Dodds and Mr. Carol L. Applegate. The new owners took over operations immediately with no disruption in service. The store was located at 710 Market Street.

Mr. Dodds had been a manager of Johnson’s Super Valu in New Carlisle and Mr. Applegate came from Hollansburg, Ohio where he had owned Applegate’s Market for many years. The new name for the store came about by using the first names of Mr. Dodd’s wife Marilyn and Mr. Applegate’s wife Sue.

The new owners were happy about being able to find a Super Valu Market available in such a thriving and friendly community. They were excited to become a part of Brookville and both families planned to move to Brookville.

The new Marilyn-Sue Super Valu store joined 1,600 independently owned and operated retail food stores serviced by Super Valu Stores, Inc. At that time, Super Valu Stores Inc. serviced food stores in 18 central states through seven operating divisions and four affiliated wholesale food firms.
