BROOKVILLE — Banners honoring local past and present members of the armed forces will soon be displayed in Brookville and Clay Township.

The banners will be displayed on AES utility poles as part of the nationwide Hometown Heroes Banner program.

“Barry Goforth, with Brookville VFW Post 3288, is requesting permission to hang military banners from AES poles around Brookville,” city manager Sonja Keaton told Brookville council.

A similar request was made for Clay Township.

“I had a gentleman contact me who wants to put up the Hometown Hero flags on AES poles in the township,” zoning inspector Kevin Garlitz told Clay Township trustees.

According to Keaton, the banners are 30 inches by 60 inches.

Both Garlitz and Keaton indicated the banners will be placed on the poles for a maximum 180 days from mid-May to mid-November.

“Hanging banners from AES poles requires a governmental entity to complete an application for (AES) approval,” Keaton said.

Both Brookville council and the Clay Township trustees gave their permission to submit an application request to AES.

“I am currently waiting on approval to see if they can hang some banners near the VFW on Carr Drive,” Keaton said.

Keaton noted the families of military members paid for the banners.

She indicated the VFW is purchasing the brackets to install the banners.

Garlitz told the trustees the VFW plans to display approximately 15 banners on AES poles on Arlington Road from U.S. 40 to the Brookville city limits.

“The banners will be displayed (in Brookville) on poles on Arlington Road, Westbrook Road, Albert Road, E. Upper Lewisburg-Salem Road and a portion of Wolf Creek Street,” Keaton told council.

The Hometown Heroes Banner program originated in Harrisburg, Pa., in 2006.
