BROOKVILLE — In March 1970, one Heart-Lung Resuscitation Unit was presented to the Village of Brookville for use in the Emergency Ambulance of the Brookville Fire Department.

It was presented by the Dayton Area Heart Association (a United Fund Agency) honoring the memory of Mr. Frank M Tait. Mr. Allen J. Johnston, chairman of the board of the Heart Association made the presentation.

Fire personnel were to be trained by Dr. Orlando, cardiologist and member of the Scientific Council of the Dayton Area Heart Association. The purpose of the presentation was to provide the village ambulance with equipment that could mean many lives saved enroute to a hospital emergency room.

Mechanical devices were not required for the immediate Heart-Lung resuscitation emergency, however, it was very useful when prolonged resuscitation or resuscitation during transportation was required. The mechanical Heart-Lung Resuscitator did not replace emergency Heart-Lung Resuscitation, but it did extend the usefulness of this procedure.

Heart-Lung Resuscitation was a proven and accepted emergency lifesaving procedure to restore respiration and circulation following the recognition of sudden cardiorespiratory arrest. It needed to be started immediately by personnel who had been adequately trained and retrained under competent medical supervision and, who by the nature of their profession or occupation, were likely to be present or called in such emergencies
