Operation “Adopt a Grandparent” underway

EATON — 2020 has been a challenging year, especially so for seniors who have been isolated in nursing homes, but an Eaton resident is trying to brighten up the lives of residents.

Adopt a Grandparent, started by August Rose, looks to deliver goodie bags to nursing home residents this holiday season.

Rose said the inspiration came from wanting to give back to seniors in the community.

“We thought of the senior idea and adopting the grandparents with them not being able to see friends and family and have visitors, just making sure that they feel extra special this holiday season,” she said.

For a $20 donation by either individuals or businesses, a senior will be given a pair of fuzzy socks, a bottle of hand and foot lotion and a hand-signed card with the name of the person or business that provided the goodie bag.

“I’m looking for anyone or any businesses that would like to adopt a grandparent this holiday season,” she said. “To be able to brighten them up is so rewarding.”

As of Dec. 3, three nursing homes – Vancrest of Eaton, Greenbriar and Maple Gardens – have all participated, with 157 out of 209 residents having already been adopted.

The goal is for every resident to receive a goodie bag, and Rose added that all money will be put towards the goodie bags.

Rose said that local businesses have been very supportive of her venture.

“It’s coming from mostly our small local businesses, which really feels good, especially because I know that they’re probably struggling to stay open,” she said. “But they’re helping us spread the word, so it feels really good.”

Businesses that have already adopted a grandparent include Bombshell Tanning, Preble Edge Fitness, Papa John’s, MedPro, The Stable, Camden Ready Mix, Wysong Gravel, New Lebanon Self Storage, Luxe Lizzies Boutique, Lonestar Family Practice and 4J’s Pizza.

Those interested in donating can contact Rose at 937-336-4391, on Facebook, or pay through PayPal ([email protected]), Venmo (@Augustrose) or Cash App ($Lashaugust). Donations should be received by Friday, Dec. 18.
