EATON — Eaton golfers Cameron and Sarah Willis both saw their seasons come to an end during district play.
Sarah, a sophomore, was one stroke away from qualifying for the girls’ state tournament for a second year in a row on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Pipestone golf course. A string of bad luck on her final two holes – where she double-bogeyed both – put her just out of reach of Columbus.
She ended the day with a 76 – the third and final qualifier shot a 75 on the day.
Sarah was 10th at state last year and had the highest finish for a freshman during the championship.
The young Eagle golfer also adds two first team All-SWBL finishes to her resume.
Cameron was hoping to get back as well, two years removed from a state appearance, when he entered district play at Weatherwax golf course on Thursday, Oct. 8. He had trouble on his front nine though, finishing seven-over par. He rallied on the back nine, shooting a 37 for an 80 overall, but he still ended up four strokes short of state.
The near-miss ends his career as an Eaton golfer, which saw two state tournament runs — where he was the state champion as a freshman and fourth overall as a sophomore. He also was a four-time first team All-SWBL finisher — including earning Player of the Year twice — and was the medalist in the SWBL tournament and sectional tournament this season.
He will continue his golf career at Wittenberg University while Sarah will return to Eaton, still eyeing the state title.
