ARCANUM — The Twin Valley South volleyball team lost to the Covington Buccaneers in four sets in the second round of the Division IV sectional tournament at Arcanum on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The 25-14, 21-25, 16-15 and 16-25 losses eliminated the Lady Panthers from the playoffs and closed out their season.

“Covington made some adjustments after the first set, moved some of their hitters around and we just didn’t match up block wise,” Coach Leslie Roberts said. “Our defense in the back row had to do just way too much work.”

The Panthers won the first set 25-16, leading through most of the game after being down early 1-3. The second set was closely contested, with several ties and lead changes before Covington took the win, 25-21.

Senior Abbey Beneke led the Lady Panthers with 16 kills, five assists, one block, and 28 digs. Zoe Utsinger had five kills and four digs. Audrey Chesney had six kills and four digs. Delaney Adams had 27 digs, 13 serve receives, two aces and two kills. Madison Wright had 19 digs and 33 serve receives. Mylan Crews had 20 assists and two kills.

“Madison played well, and the rest of the seniors, Emma, Delaney and Abby, had a fantastic match,” said Roberts. “But you can’t just rely on hit or miss plays here or there when the opponent gets on a roll seven points at a time when we aren’t serve-receiving well on defense.”

“The team had tremendous improvements across the board,” Roberts said. “They have matured and become so much better since day one.”

Twin Valley South finished the season with a 15-9 overall record, and 8-4 in the Cross County Conference.
