WEST ALEXANDRIA — The Twin Valley South boys soccer team competed in two matches last week wining one and tying another.

The Panthers tied Madison, 1-1, on Tuesday, Aug. 23, and beat Carlisle, 4-1, on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Against Madison, Daniel Page scored a penalty kick for the Panthers. Zach Guehring had nine saves. The Panthers had 20 shots on goal.

“I told my team I was happy but not satisfied,” coach Clay Young said. “I thought we played a great game. We held a majority of possession and had 20 shots to their nine, so we had a lot more scoring opportunities.”

“We just couldn’t get that go ahead goal,” Young said. “Even though Madison had a few really good players graduate, they were still a good team and defending champs out of the SWBL Buckeye Division. This game was a step in the right direction for us, but I think we can continue to get better.”

On Saturday, the Panthers played a much better game against the Carlisle Indians. South rolled up a 4-0 lead in the first half with some key passes to open strikers to take advantage of the one-on-one situations against the Carlisle goalkeeper. The Indians scored early in the second half, but they were shutdown for the rest of the match.

“Anytime you get a win, it’s a good thing,” said Young. “I think in the second half, we took our foot off the gas a bit. It’s hard to keep your composure and focus when having such a big lead in the game, but it’s good to get a win. We played well defensively. We made some adjustments with our personnel after losing a wingman.”

South was scheduled to play on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Cross County Conference foe Miami East and host Union County (Ind.) on Thursday. The Panthers are currently 1-1-1 on the season.
