NEW PARIS — A new era has begun for the National Trail golf program, as the school has introduced its first girls golf team in years.

Coach Jordan Schlamb is in charge of the girls team this year and is looking for great things with some high levels of talent coming into the program.

“We have about six players this year so far,” said Schlamb. “Allison Brubaker is a returning player with experience. We have a very solid freshman coming in, Makenna Jones, who has played a lot of amateur golf and had performed very well, earning a lot of awards and placings in the area.”

Brubaker is a senior.

“This is my second year playing, I’ve improved a lot,” said Brubaker. “We have two new girls here that are playing for the first time. I love my team, we’re looking to have a good year. I’m trying to break 100 this year and keep the team positive and motivated. I played on the guys’ team last year, so I think this is great.”

Makenna Jones is a highly touted freshman who joined the Blazers this year. Her accomplishments in amateur competition in the region have been exemplary. “I’m excited just to have a girls team this year,” said Jones. “Most people didn’t know we had a team, so I’m excited. It’s new for people hearing about us.”

Other players include Makenna Laird, Brooke Cunningham, and Savanna Abner.

“Great athletes that are playing golf for the first time,” assistant coach Brian Jones said of the trio. “They are hard workers and are really picking the game up quickly.”

The team begins the season at the Preble County Tournament at the Eaton Country Club on Monday, Aug.12. “For me, it will be another day of golf,” said Jones. “I’m so used to playing, I get so focused on my game, that it doesn’t affect me so much, but I’m looking forward to getting this season started.”
