WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley South standout athlete Morgan Newhart has signed a letter of intent to play for Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida.

Newhart attended signing day on Tuesday, June 28, with her family and coaches, to begin her collegiate career 993 miles from her hometown.

Newhart established an impressive soccer career at South. In her 2015 senior campaign, Newhart was team captain, earned first team All-CCC and was Runner-up Player of the Year in the CCC. In addition, she was named first team All-Area in soccer. She was also first team All-CCC and All-Area in 2014 as well.

Warner University is a Christian college, located about 30 mile south of Orlando. The Warner Royals is an NAIA Division II program that went 9-10 last season under the husband-wife coaching combination of George and Bethany Orroyo. The Royals have 23 total intercollegiate athletic programs, including football, that is part of the Sun Conference in Florida. The college is a liberal arts school with an enrollment of just over 1,000 students, and its academic schools are in ministries, business, science, and education.

“I’m super excited to play,” said Newhart after the signing. “They won regionals last year and went on to the NAIA championship tournament, so it’s a good program down there. I’m not sure if I will be a starter as a freshman but that’s my goal, if not, then I’ll enjoy the workouts there and try to get better. My major will be in biology so I can be a PA as a psychiatrist. I think I’ll adapt very well down there — I hate the cold here and I like lots of sun.”

Her father, Todd Newhart, was among several family members in attendance. “We’re really happy that she got signed on to Warner. She’s one of those kids who never says die. We’re very proud of her. She’s going to be very far away from friends and family so a lot of face time on Skype will be upcoming.”

Equally proud was her mother, Lisa. “I’m very happy. She’s as morally motivated as she is athletically and academically. She has good goals. Warner is a good Christian school, she wants to minor in youth pastoring along with her major in biology. We’re really happy with coach George and his wife Bethany. It’s been a pleasure watching her growing up. I think she’s going to be happy there, so her being so far away won’t be so bad. I’ll be driving and flying down there frequently to help her out. I want to, but my husband won’t let us move down there. We will be catching a lot of games down there.”
