NT holds summer volleyball camp

NEW PARIS — National Trail High School held its annual girls’ volleyball camp June 20-24. The camp invited kids in grades 2-6 for morning sessions, and grades seven and up in afternoon sessions, for a total of five days of instruction and fun.

This particular camp had the distinction of hosting some top notch volunteers to coach: Kyle Homeyer and Kate Yeazel, daughter of coach Joy Yeazel.

Kate Yeazel is a graduate of NT and recently graduated from University of Pittsburgh as part of the Panthers’ volleyball program. During her senior season in 2014, she earned second team All-ACC and finished ninth in career block assists with 234. She is currently playing volleyball in England. At National Trail, she eclipsed numerous school records and was a Senior All-Star in District 15.

Homeyer is Director of Volleyball Operations at University of Virginia, and is currently a USA Volleyball High Performance coach. He was a three-time academic all-conference winner during his collegiate days at Quincy University, graduating in 2011.

“So we have a younger camp. A lot of the younger kids have never known anything about volleyball so what were going for was to make them leave the camp being able to hit the ball over the net and understand the basics,” said Kate Yeazel during the event. “This is my high school, so it’s awesome to go out and gain those experiences and be able to come back and help out my hometown. I will be playing overseas in September, so I won’t be coaching but Kyle just loves it.

“I played at Durham University in England — I was able to start my master’s degree there and play because the eligibility over there is way different than in the U.S.,” she added. “So I played for an international league team. I will be looking for more offers over there this year.”

“We had a really good turnout this year,” NT Coach Joy Yeazel said. “About 35 kids for the younger camp, and so a lot of enthusiasm from the kids. The kids got a lot of good instruction from such fine coaches in Kyle and Kate. I was so blessed that they were here — their volleyball knowledge is so much greater than mine at the higher levels.”
