Preble Shawnee conducts girls volleyball summer camp

CAMDEN Preble Shawnee hosted its girls volleyball camp from June 13-16 for girls in grades 3-8. The four day camp operated in the early afternoon for two and a half hours per session. Over 40 aspiring young girls attended the camp — up from previous numbers. Organizers seek to continue adding more in the years to come.

Amy Stevenson is the coach in charge of the camp.

“The camp focuses on teaching the basic fundamental skills for third graders and as they graduate into junior high, we are looking into developing more in-depth skills to develop a more rounded player, especially with the older kids,” she said. “We want to teach serving, passing, setting and spiking. Good hands, good fluid movement, and teamwork is what we emphasize here.

“The goal here is to develop for the future. We have some girls from Twin Valley South here so we have two school districts, which is nice because a lot of schools do not offer a summer camp. This is about the only time we can get into the gym because in July, the school will work on the gym floor so we run this camp while we could. This camp has been running for at least 10 years here.”

Stevenson has been involved at Preble Shawnee as a teacher for 18 years. This season will be her first time back into coaching. She coached at Tri-Village, and was actually the middle school coach.

“I’m stepping in for Christy Cottongim as she is at orientation with her son who is going to college,” Stevenson noted. “I’m also going to be doing junior high as well.”

The Preble Shawnee Arrows’ program has a long and storied history of success in volleyball, with wins in sectionals and conference. Their goal is to add more titles to the gymnasium banners.
