CAMDEN — Preble Shawnee hosted its first boys tennis tournament on Saturday, May 7.

The four-team tournament included Eaton, Edgewood and Franklin.

A single elimination format was used in the singles matches and first doubles, and a “round robin” format was used in the second doubles due to Franklin being short on players.

At first singles, Edgewood’s Alex Fisette defeated Eaton’s Brad Kramer 6-0, 6-2 to claim the title. Kramer rallied to defeat Matt McGrew of Franklin 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the championship match. Fisette topped Preble Shawnee’s Luke Feck 6-4, 6-0 in the other first round match. In the consolation match Feck beat McGrew 8-1.

In second singles, Edgewood added another title as Andrew Testas defeated Dalton Campbell of Franklin 6-4, 6-1. In the semis, Testas beat Breven Perry of Eaton 6-1, 6-4 and Campbell beat Chris Allen of Shawnee 6-1, 6-2. In the consolation match Perry defeated Allen 8-2.

Edgewood completed the sweep of singles titles when David Winter beat Cody Frizzell of Eaton 6-1, 6-2 in the championship of the third singles matches. In the semis, Winter beat Shawnee’s Hayden Brown 6-0, 6-1 and Frizzell won 6-4, 6-4 over Nathaneel Rudd of Franklin. In the consolation match, Rudd deafeated Brown 9-7.

At first doubles, Eaton’s Aaron Tolliver and Andrew Collins took home first place with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alec Hamblin and Cailin Foriest of Preble Shawnee. In the semifinals, Tolliver and Collins beat Evan Harris and Austin Wood of Franklin 6-1, 6-1, while Hamblin and Foriest beat Christian Alarcon or Tyler Tegenkamp of Edgewood 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

In the consolation match, Alarcon and Tegenkamp beat Harris and Woods 8-0.

At second doubles, in round robin play, Edgewood’s duo of Trey Moore and Ross Hamey beat Chucky Short and Cole Michael of Preble Shawnee 7-6(4), 6-3 and John Altom and Kaleb Wilson of Eaton 6-1, 6-3 to give the Cougars four titles on the day. Short and Michael defeated Altom and Wilson 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“We had a nice day for the event. The weather held out for us and we saw some outstanding matches today,” Preble Shawnee coach Dave Hubbard said. “Unfortunately, as the host team, we were not able to finish first at any spots, but both our doubles teams played great first round matches. I think the kids all had a great time.”
