OXFORD — Miami’s track and field program hosted its first home meet of the season Saturday, April 2.

The Red and White distance squad made a strong start in the 3000 meter run with Alesha Vovk (10:01.10), Maria Scavuzzo (10:06.12) and Brenna Poulsen (10:16.37) sweeping the top three spots. Fellow RedHawks Sarah Starrett (10:25.49; 5th), Maria Weisgerber (10:36.89, 7th), Jackie Mullins (10:42.89, 9th), Kirsten Petrosky (10:45.79, 10th), and Taylor Wood (10:54.35; 13th) rounded out Miami’s contingent.

Not to be outdone, the RedHawk men also dominated the 3000 meters with the home team sweeping the top five spots. Ryan Pitner laid down an excellent kick to finish first in 8:47.60. The quartet of Jake Brumfield (8:47.84; 2nd), Ben Metzger (8:50.22; 3rd), Zac Thompson (8:50.89; 4th) and Matt Stewart (8:51.76; 5th) put down strong performances to fill out the sweep. Matt Dietrich (9:10.38; 11th), Patrick Santino (9:13.88; 13th) and Johnathan Kissel (9:16.23; 14th) rounded out the Miami squad.

In the 1500, the distance squad did it again with Alexis Szivan leading the way in in the women’s race, winning in 4:45.69. Taylor Broermann, of Eaton, was second for the ‘Hawks in 4:52.45, taking fifth overall. McKenna Kiple (4:58.64; 12th) and Haley Sandvik (4:59.46; 14th) also got their seasons started strong. In the men’s race, Kane Dixon led the squad in his track debut taking seventh in 4:07.24, Jordan Knapp and Stephen Biebelhausen took 10th (4:11.74) and 12th (4:13.21) respectively.

In the 800, Max Lewis and Johnathan Fee took to the track for the Red and White, finishing in fifth (2:01.01) and eighth (2:01.70), respectively. In women’s action, Haley Sandvik (2:31.48; 13th) led the way and was followed by the duo of Maria Weisgerber (2:33.96; 16th) and Jackie Mullins (2:36.83; 20).

In hurdles action, the RedHawks saw Kathie Wollney take home the win in the women’s 400 meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:02.08. Fellow RedHawk Morgan Rice took sixth in 1:06.53. In the 100 meter hurdles the team of Alexus Jimson Miller and Caitlyn Redmon finished third and fourth, clocking in at 14.40 and 14.54. Wollney’s time knocked .03 seconds off her MAC leading time from last weekend.

In the men’s 100, Kenny Glenn made a pass of 10.79 to finish third on the day. Fellow ‘Hawks Avery Taylor and Kenny Glenn took 11th and 12th in 11.18 and 11.21, respectively. For the women, Briah Owens ran the 100 posting a time of 12.56 for eighth and Lauren Schattinger was 15th in 13.10.

The 400 saw Kalliopi Kountouri finish second for Miami in 58.58. Zuri Davis (1:03.51; 8th), Aryelle Player (1:04.13; 9th) and Alexa Ross (1:04.94; 11th) completed the RedHawk effort. In the men’s race, Jake Owens took second in 50.38. Right behind him was Adam Bodrick in 51.95 for fourth and Zane Shreve posted 56.53 for 15th.

In the high jump, Peter Stefanski took second for Miami clearing the 6-4.75 meter mark. In the women’s competition Molly Balcer and Jess Baker both cleared 5-1 to take a share of a five-way tie for first place.

Pole Vault saw Matt Owens take third on a mark of 15-7; fellow RedHawk Jake Hensh took fifth clearing 14-1.25.

In women’s shot put, Arionna Darling finished second for the Red and White marking 49-7.25. Ashley Frahm and Katie Walter were fourth and fifth with marks of 51-1 and 44-11.5 respectively. Andrew Vollett finished third in the men’s shot put, marking 52-8.

In the men’s hammer, Zubin Coleman marked 169-5.5 to take fourth on the day. Martha Szekely took fourth in the women’s hammer marking 177-7.5. The duo of Frahm and Walter finished sixth and seventh marking 173-3.5 and 170-10.

While dangerous weather conditions cut the meet short before the finishing relays, the 4x100m was run earlier in the day. The Miami women’s squad of Owens, Redmon, Schattinger and Jimson-Miller took fourth in the 4x100m relay with a time of 48.76 and the men’s cadre of Owens, Cole, Bodrick and Glenn finished second in 42.43.

The RedHawks will return to action this weekend at the Hilltopper Relays at Eastern Kentucky University.
