Eaton wrestling has up, down week

EATON — The Eaton wrestling team was busy this week, facing off in four dual meets, finishing 2-2.

The Eagles faced off against Covington, Coldwater, National Trail, and Troy Christian on the week, beating both Trail and Troy Christian in a double dual held at Eaton on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Against Trail they only lost on match and used five pins and seven forfeits to defeat the Blazers, 75-6.

Wade Monebrake (106) pinned Derek Nugent in 21 seconds, Brian Conard (113) pinned Cade Carter in 18 seconds, Justin Welcome (138) pinned Robert Nave in 1:03, Parker Wilken (170) pinned Donnie Pegg in 1:20, and Kevin Melling (195) pinned Lane Hurd in 55 seconds.

Isaac Ilo (152) also won his match, beating Josh Cook in an 8-6 decision.

Cameron Schmidt (120), Coleman Manning (126), Brandon Weaver (132), Mac Altom (145), Drew Moore (160), Spencer Reynolds (182) and Matt Todd (220) all won by forfeit.

Then against Troy Christian, the Eagles won 48-25, netting one pin and two closely contested decisions.

Moore (160) won by pin in 45 seconds while Reynolds (182) won 1-0 and Todd (220) won 5-1. Schmidt (120), Weaver (132), Welcome (138), Altom (145), Ilo (152) and Melling (195) won by forfeit.

Earlier in the week, they wrestled Covington and came up short 42-33.

Although the Eagles were on the wrong end of the scoreboard, they notched five pins by Monebrake (106), Weaver (132), Ilo (152), Moore (160) and Todd (220) and Manning (126) won 9-7 in overtime.

Next up, they wrestled Coldwater and again lost a close dual 35-31. Weaver (132) and Wilken (170) both managed to pin their opponents while Monebrake (106) and Todd (220) won by technical fall.

Manning (126), Ilo (152) and Melling (195) won their matches by decision.

“Both losses were hard fought and came in the middle of the week. This will help us adjust and be ready for the regional duals on Wednesday,” said head coach Mark Silvers.

Eaton will host the first round of the regional duals on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and they will compete with Meadowdale in the first round. The winner of that matchup will compete with the winner of Oakwood and Tipp City.

Then on Friday and Saturday, the Eagles will host the Eaton Sam Ridder Invitational. The invite will hold a special ceremony on Saturday at 6 p.m. before the finals, honoring Ridder and officially recognizing the new name of the tournament.
