Eaton grapplers have successful holiday break

EATON — The Eaton wrestling team had a pretty successful holiday break, opening up with a double dual victory over both Kenton Ridge (72-12) and Piqua (47-25) on Thursday, Dec. 17, before finishing sixth overall in the small school division at the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association’s Holiday Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 28-29.

At the GMVWA tournament, the Eagles also finished 15th overall out of all 57 schools in attendance.

“This was a great team effort. All but one (wrestler) won at least one match. And two more were a match from placing,” said Eaton coach Mark Silvers.

The team went into the tournament with one eight seed and all other wrestlers unseeded, so to come in sixth place is a step in the right direction, added Silvers.

At the holiday tourney, Wade Monebrake (106) finished fifth in his weight class and was 5-2 over the two day period. In his final match, he defeated Brossart of Ryle 2-0.

Brandon Weaver (132) was seventh and also finished the meet 5-2. He defeated Kelly of Pickerington Central 5-4 in his final match.

Also competing well was Mac Altom (145), who was 7th and sported a record of 6-2. In his final match, he pinned Kennedy of Watkins Memorial in 2:22.

Eaton also got a good showing out of Matt Todd (220), who finished in sixth with a 5-3 record.

“As a team, they have competed well the entire month of December. Now we build through January,” said Silvers. “We have two tough tournaments, Top Gun and Sam Ridder Eaton Invite, and five good tri-meets to prepare us for February. I’m really looking forward to watching this group develop.”

Eaton is scheduled to host a dual meet with Greenville and Talawanda on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m.
