CAMDEN — Nine Arrows scored as the Preble Shawnee girls’ basketball team held Dayton Dunbar to just 14 points on Monday, Dec. 21 — and the team went on to win 54-14.

Chloe Smith and Elise Walker both scored 13 points to lead the Arrows to the blowout victory.

Dunbar played the Arrows close in the first quarter, scoring nearly half the team’s points for the game — six in the opening frame.

The Arrows established Walker early on the block, as Ashton Collins fed the junior post player twice in the opening frame to help the Arrows grab the lead. Collins had six assists in the contest to lead the Arrows.

The game was blown wide open in the second quarter and by halftime the Arrows led 26-8. Head coach Joe Webster felt his team’s ability to push the ball wore down the visiting Dunbar side.

The Arrows created 17 steals in the game, allowing the team easy transition baskets throughout the contest.

The Arrows held Dunbar to just six points in the second half, all which came in the third quarter.

It was also the first game the Arrows played all season, with a full roster as point guards Allison Began and Nicole Sims returned to the lineup.

Webster talked about the addition of the two players: “We played pretty well without them, but you can see a big difference when they are out there.

“When I have them on the floor, it’s a different team,” he said.

It was Began’s first game of the season and Sims returned after being injured earlier in the year. Began only scored two points but added an assist, three rebounds, and two steals in limited minutes.

Sims scored eight points in her return to action; she also added four steals, two rebounds and two assists.

Preble Shawnee faces a two-week break from action after the victory. The team’s game against Cincinnati Christian was canceled.

The Arrows, now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the SWBL Buckeye, return to action on Monday, Jan. 4, when they travel to Bishop Fenwick.

Preble Shawnee’s Elise Walker goes up for a lay-up against Dayton Dunbar on Monday, Dec. 21. Walker and Chloe Smith led the Arrows with 13 points each, as nine Arrows scored in the 40-point victory.
