WEST ALEXANDRIA — After two and a half quarters of closely contested basketball, Twin Valley South went on a 17-1 run to put the game away and beat National Trail 53-27 on Friday, Dec. 4.
“We made shots. I don’t think anything changed. I thought we had good shots the first half, we just missed them,” said South head coach Tony Augspurger on his team’s scoring spree.
Trail went into halftime only down one, but South hit four three-pointers in the course of three minutes, essentially burying the Blazers who had already clawed back from an 11-0 start to the contest.
“I thought we played extremely hard. I’m very proud of my guys in how they’re competing. They are learning to compete,” said Trail head coach Mike Harrison. “First half, we were playing good defense, we were competing very hard.”
South outscored Trail 36-11 in the second half, but not before Trail took a one-point lead midway through the third.
“We’re not to where we sustain our execution. We can execute for periods, and then it drops off. It’s been that way. We are working to get better at it. We haven’t been able to sustain for four quarters,” said Harrison.
The win puts South off to a 2-1 start on the season while it drops Trail to 0-2 on the year.
“I thought outside of the second quarter, we’ve played pretty well our first few games. Our effort has been pretty good. We are playing together, I like our chemistry,” said Augspurger.
The Panthers were led by Jacob Bassler, who had 15 points while Jared Cottingim and Travis Lovely both added nine.
Trail also took on Brookville on Saturday, Dec. 5, losing 64-25 to the Blue Devils.
Brookville hit seven three-pointers in the first half to jump out big early.
Dalton Mason led the Blazers with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Trail is scheduled to host Tri-County North on Friday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. before hosting Madison on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
South was scheduled to host Valley View on Tuesday, Dec. 8 before also hosting Miami East on Friday, Dec. 11, both games tipping off at 6 p.m.
