CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee girls defeated Franklin Monroe 1-0 on Thursday, Oct. 22, to set up a rematch with defending state champions Hamilton Badin in the sectional final.

The Jets didn’t seem interested in playing any offense as they applied the “park the bus strategy” for most of the match.

Preble Shawnee played on offense the entire first half, but Franklin Monroe had all 11 players playing defense and the Arrows were unable to capitalize on having a dominating possession total in the first half.

It appeared the Franklin Monroe strategy was going to pay off in the first half until sophomore Saylor Jewell found the back of the net on a near post shot from a Meagan Lindon assist.

Head coach Kevin Schaeffer said he told his team at half the strategy was showing respect to their talent.

“I told my girls at half that they should be flattered and not frustrated at how FM was playing us,” he said. “By bunkering in, FM was essentially telling everyone at the game that Preble Shawnee is too good of a team for FM to beat. So, the next best option is to hold on for dear life and hope for an OT breakaway or a win in shootouts.”

Chances for either side were hard to come by the in second half, as the Arrows saw the better of the opportunities in the second 40 minutes.

The Arrow goalies saw so little action in the game they did not record a single save.

By the end of the match, Preble Shawnee dominated the game and Jewell’s goal was enough to send the Arrows to the sectional final against Badin on Monday, Oct. 26 at Eaton High School.

“We had some successes in the last game with them, but we came up short,” Schaeffer said. “I know we did not see Badin’s best game that day and I expect them to be tougher yet.”

“I also know that Badin did not see our best game either,” he said.

Schaeffer believes Badin exposed flaws in the Arrow backline that have been corrected. “Our defense made some mistakes that since have been corrected,” he said. “Our offense has gotten more dynamic and we definitely have a better grasp on our formations that we run. I expect a heck of a ball game in a competition of two very good teams.”

The Arrows are now 12-4-1 on the season.
