CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee tennis team finished a tremendous season by picking up a final team victory over Edgewood on Monday, Sept. 29, winning all five matches.

Despite a terrific regular season, the team’s success was unable to carry over into the state tournament as Jane Feck participated in singles play and the team’s top two players, Ashlyn and Brooklyn Hubbard, participated in the doubles tournament.

The Hubbard’s were able to pick up a victory in the first round, defeating Claire Nikolai and Rachel Hawley of Alter, 6-3, 6-1.

However the pair was unable to carry on the success in the second round, losing to Amanda Draeger and Kat Dranchak of CJ 6-4, 6-1.

The loss ended the season for the two players who made up the first and second singles team, each going 18-1 during the regular season.

Feck was able to win two matches in the tournament despite playing as a doubles player throughout the regular season.

The freshman defeated Clara Retfitt of Greeneview, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round before defeating Aley Fiore of Northridge 6-1, 6-1 in the second.

Feck however played eventual sectional champion Kelly Pleiman of C-J in the third round and lost, 6-0, 6-0.

Head coach Dave Hubbard was disappointed the season came to a sudden end.

“It was a bit disappointing that none of our girls advanced today, but quite honestly, we did what we set out to do and that was to win a league title,” Hubbard said, noting the season was still the most successful in program history. “To have someone advance to districts would have been a nice bonus, but not doing so certainly doesn’t take anything away from these girls and the great season they had.”

During the match against Edgewood, Brooklyn Hubbard ended her career with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hannah Clemmons, ending the season with a 22-1 record in singles play, and a 64-23 career record.

Ashlyn Hubbard defeated Julia Muse 6-1, 6-0, Sydney Quillen defeated Kailyn Lambertson, 6-0, 6-0.

Allison Zornes and Alivia Reek defeated Cassidy White and Sam Hoit 6-2, 6-2, while Delaney Bennet and Lauren Smith defeated Emma Allen and Bekah Moore 7-5, 6-3.
