Eagles fall, 10-6, in turnover-marred game versus Monroe

MONROE — The Eaton Eagle offense failed to take off as missed opportunities on both offense and defense cost the team during a 10-6 loss to Monroe on Friday, Oct 2.

“We didn’t take advantage of some opportunities,” head coach Brad Davis said. “We forced four first-half turnovers, but weren’t able to score any points from those. I think two were empty red zone trips.”

The empty red zone trips were a theme all night for the Eagles who failed to convert a long kickoff run to start the second half, making it three red zone trips in a row without any points.

Davis said defensively the team also has to find ways to get off the field.

“Monroe was able to convert on a few key third down situations,” Davis said. “Defensively, we have to find a way to get our offense back on the field.” He continued by pointing out a pivotal moment in the game: “Late in the game, we force a punting situation. They have a bad snap and the punter is able to get around us for a first down. Just too many missed opportunities.”

The rain played havoc on the game all night, as the teams combined for nine turnovers. Eaton turned the ball over four times and Monroe the other five.

Davis also said his team must eliminate negative plays on first down. “We moved the ball effectively at times,” he said. “But we didn’t get consistent play offensively on first down. We were behind the sticks too many times after first down, due to some penalties and missed assignments.”

Davis said his team must eliminate negative yardage plays and must start to hold on to the ball moving forward.

Damon Willard finished the game with 125 rushing yards on 25 attempts and one touchdown. Tyrell David recorded two interceptions as Lew Bowser added another.

Kevin Melling forced a fumble and Donnie Nicodemous and Drew Moore each recovered one.

On Friday, Oct 9, the Eagles (2-4) host Oakwood (2-4) for homecoming.

“Oakwood is an option offense. We have to play with great discipline defensively,” Davis said of his next opponent. “They have a very good quarterback and tailback combination and their offensive line is very quick off the ball.”

Davis told his team homecoming is all about Friday night. “We discussed this week with our guys and the distractions that come with homecoming. It’s a special time for our guys,” the first year coach said. “But, we want them to understand that the football game is what’s important. The game is why all of the festivities occur. Our focus and preparation is the key this week.”
