CENTERVILLE — Despite being under the weather last week, Preble Shawnee’s Pierce Elliott still managed to qualify for the Division II tennis districts by virtue of his third place finish at the sectional on Saturday, May 13, at Centerville High School.

“I am really proud of Pierce and what he has accomplished so far this season,” Preble Shawnee coach Dave Hubbard said. “To advance this far as a freshman is very impressive. We are excited for next week’s district tournament in Mason. I know he is pumped about playing on the courts where the pros play at the Lindner Center.”

Elliot opened play on Thursday and cruised in his three matches that day.

He beat Logan Connally of Oakwood 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. In the second round, he beat Ethan Croucher (Legacy Christian) 6-1, 6-1. In the third round he took down Eaton’s Breven Perry 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semifinal and qualify for the district tournament.

“Pierce played with a great deal of focus and intensity today and really dominated all three of his matches. He’s been a bit under the weather the last couple days but did a nice job of playing through it,” Hubbard said.

On Saturday, Elliott, the No. 2 seed lost to No. 3 Michael Perevozchicov (Miami Valley) 6-3, 6-3.

Elliott bounced back to win the third match over No. 4 seed Paul Hodge (Dayton Christian) 6-2, 6-1.

By virtue of his third place finish in the Centerville sectional, Elliott will be a No. 3 seed when the district tournament begins Thursday.
