Preble Shawnee golf season under way

CAMDEN — The 2015 Preble Shawnee golf season is under way as the team enters with the goal of improving on last season’s record.

Head coach Roy Lucas said the early season practices have been going great, and the entire team has a positive attitude heading into the season.

Lucas said he is excited about the return of the golf season, because of the way early practices have gone. Lucas said the team has been practicing hard and has been focused leading up to the season.

Part of the reason for the excitement is the return of senior Kyle Fryer, who was the team low medalist last year. Fryer comes into the season looking to continue to put low scores on the board and Lucas hopes to see his senior advance when sectionals come around.

Fryer will be joined by fellow senior Johnny Cottingim who looks to continue bringing in low scores for the team throughout the season.

Lucas is also hopeful the team will get a boost from some strong underclassmen play from junior Colton Pugh, sophomores Craig Doty and first time player, sophomore Michael Fritts.

Lucas had a simple recipe for what the team does between now and the end of the year to make sure this is a successful season for the Arrows: practice more.

“This team has to practice more,” Lucas said.

The team’s season started on Friday, Aug. 7, when they hosted Waynesville at the Liberty Country Club.

The match went Waynesville’s way as the Spartans won by a total score of 262-218.

Fryer had the team’s lowest round after shooting a 52, but fell three shots short of the round’s lowest score as Jack Blair of Waynesville shot a 49.

Lucas said the first match of the season was a struggle, but the team played better than what the scores show.

He said while it is disappointing, it is still early in the season. He told his team to keep their heads up.

“I have confidence that the team will turn this around,” he said. “I reminded them that this is the first match of the season. I told them we will keep improving with play and practice.”

The team will have a chance to get back on the course when they travel to Milton Union on Monday, Aug. 17, and Middletown-Madison on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
