EATON — The struggles for Eaton’s girls’ basketball team continued last week as the Eagles suffered a pair of losses.

Eaton led a one-loss Edgewood team by a point (23-22) late in the first half, but went cold offensively in a 54-31 loss on Thursday, Jan. 26. On Saturday, Eaton suffered a 58-42 loss to Valley View in a Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division game.

With the losses, Eaton has now dropped five of its last six games.

“In the Edgewood game, I thought we played really hard against a very good physical team. I was impressed with the way we rallied from an early deficit to take a 23-22 lead with two minutes to play in the first half,” Eaton coach Dave Honhart said. “There’s a reason Edgewood is 16-1 and they responded to our run with one of their own at the end of the half. We struggled with turnovers in the second half, but I was proud of our effort.”

Freshman Bailey Shepherd led the team with 10 points and five rebounds. Anna Black added seven points and Ashlynn Black chipped in with six. For the game, Eaton committed 29 turnovers.

Against Valley View, the Eagles fell behind 19-6 in the first quarter and never recovered. The Spartans led 35-18 at the half and 47-26 after three quarters.

“Against Valley View, I thought we played with a lack of energy compared with what we are capable of, and you can’t do that against a team as good as Valley View,” Honhart said.

Annika Gels led the team with 11 points. Shepherd added seven and led the team in rebounding again with five. Emily Dungan chipped in with eight points.

Valley View’s Hunter Stidham led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting. She also had 10 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and four blocked shots.

Eaton (6-12 overall, 3-7 SWBL Southwestern Division) is scheduled to travel to Madison on Thursday, Feb. 2, and will host Franklin on Saturday. The junior varsity is scheduled to tip at noon, with the varsity contest to follow at 1:15 p.m.

Eaton will host Northmont on Monday, Feb. 6, and will honor its lone senior, Megan Lipps, prior to the contest.
