EATON — During the 2017 Preble County Pork Festival the National Trail MVCTC FFA Chapter worked hand in hand with the Ohio Pork Council to plan and execute the entire education center for the festival.

The education center consisted of utilizing Bruner Arena and two barns which typically house the swine during the Preble County Fair.

The education area consisted of a live pig display and many booths about pork products with hands-on activities. There were live pigs on display and some of the purebreds highlighted included the Red Wattle, Hampshire, Yorkshire and Hereford. The live pig display also included several crossbred pigs.

Also at the education center, there was a virtual pig farm tour, swine corn hole and a display of a modern hog farm. There were many activities for all ages to do, including bean bag toss, ear notching practice, and other activities.

The education area also included the famous sausage making. This year both Miami Valley Career Technology and National Trail administration assisted with the sausage making.

National Trail MVCTC FFA also worked with colleges through out Ohio and Indiana to display information relevant to pursuing careers in agriculture. Furthermore, local agriculture groups from Preble County displayed their information. These groups included the Preble County Farm Bureau, Soil and Water Conservation District, Preble County Solid Waste District, and FSA. Miami Valley Career Technology also displayed their RAM Tech trailer for festival goers to visit.

The National Trail MVCTC FFA chapter has documented over 1,329 hours in preparing for the festival and over 650 hours from students volunteering at the festival. This is an awesome opportunity for chapter members to mingle with community members and acquire community service hours towards different degrees they can obtain within the local, state and National FFA organization.
