A week after reaching his 100th career win, Eaton’s Aldin Leaker reached another milestone — qualifying for the state wrestling tournament.
Leaker, who finished second at the district, was one of 10 Eagles to wrestle at the Division II Bowling Green District, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22.
Eaton finished 18th overall as team with 35 points. Central Catholic won the team title with 191 points, while Lexington was runner-up with 115 and Perkins was third with 100.5.
“Aldin Leaker had a great tournament,” Eaton coach Mark Silvers said.
Leaker pinned Jordan Dalton of Lexington in 3 minutes, 59 seconds in his first match. In his second match, he pinned Lucas Beauch of Toledo Central Catholic in 3:13. In the semis, he pinned Anthony Arroyo of Maumee in 2:27.
In the final, he lost to Tre Campbell of Wauseon. Leaker will take a 30-9 record into the state tournament, which begins Thursday, Feb. 27 at Value City Arena in Columbus.
“Aldin is peaking at the right time. The potential is there for a great finish,” Silvers said.
Silvers said a majority of the qualifiers were making their first trip to districts.
“For eight of the ten qualified it was their first district tournament and that can make for a real learning experience,” Silvers aid.
Six of the ten went out in the first day.
“Now, with this experience and some committed work we can come back next year with a vengeance,” Silvers said.
Finishing the first day were freshman Noah Herzog (9-23), sophomore Mac Altom (23-10), sophomore Drew Moore (20-12), senior Shane Helsinger (17-16), sophomore Matt Todd (22-12), and Junior Shane Hammock (19-17).
“Five of these guys finished their first full varsity season and to come close to twenty victories and be a district qualifier is a real accomplishment,” Silvers said.
Competing the second day, freshman Coleman Foster lost in the consolation quarterfinals to finish his first year at 25-10. Junior Blake Sittloh also lost in the consolation quarterfinals finishing his year at 26-13. Junior Levi Gilbert lost in the second round of consolations going 18-15 for the year.
